My take on AI and why it can't potentially replace humans, Yet!

Introduction

Have you ever wondered how is it that your virtual assistant such as Siri or Bixby can convert your speech into text? How is it your typos are autocorrected? How does predictive texting work?

Well, the above are just some examples of Artificial Intelligence(AI).

The potential for artificial intelligence (AI) to disrupt numerous industries and even replace human workers has become a hot issue in recent years. While it's true that AI has advanced significantly in a lot of fields, it's crucial to understand that there are still substantial constraints on what it is capable of. We'll examine the state of AI today and the reasons why it won't likely ever completely replace people in this essay.

But before we do, Let us first understand what is AI, shall we?

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field of computer science that aims to create intelligent machines that can think and act like humans. These machines are designed to be able to perform tasks that typically require human-like intelligence, such as understanding natural language, recognizing patterns, learning from experience, and making decisions.

AI can be used in a variety of applications, including language translation, image and speech recognition, and decision-making. It is also being used in areas such as healthcare, finance, and transportation to improve efficiency and accuracy.

There are several different approaches to creating AI, including machine learning and deep learning. Machine learning is a method of training algorithms to perform a specific task by providing them with large amounts of data and allowing them to learn from the data. Deep learning is a type of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks to mimic the way the human brain processes information.

While AI has the potential to revolutionize many industries and improve our daily lives, it also raises ethical and social concerns. Some people worry about the potential for AI to take over jobs and displace human workers, while others are concerned about the potential for AI to be used in harmful ways. As AI continues to advance, it is important to consider these issues and ensure that AI is developed and used responsibly.

And this is what we are going to talk about today. How AI CANNOT potentially replace humans.

Where is this fear of AI replacing humans stem from?

The fear that artificial intelligence (AI) could potentially replace humans is largely driven by the rapid pace of technological change and the increasing capabilities of AI systems. As AI systems become more advanced and are able to perform a wider range of tasks, it is natural for people to wonder whether they will eventually be able to replace humans in certain jobs or even surpass human intelligence altogether.

As AI systems become more efficient and cost-effective, they may be able to perform certain tasks more cheaply and accurately than humans, leading to concerns about job loss and economic disruption.

Speaking in a general retrospective manner, the argument and fear do have some truth to it that AI has the potential to replace "some" of the jobs of human workers. But that is where the problem lies. It can bring on many improvements to our daily life by automating tasks but it can never replicate some tasks as a human can. Why?

Why AI is here to stay but not replace!

Let us take a few examples here so I can elaborate and illustrate them to you. I am sure you must have heard about a recent AI app called "ChatGPT", and another AI app called "Synthesia". If you didn't, that's alright let me walk you through them and get to the point:

ChatGPT:

I am picking ChatGPT as a prime example as this has been a hot topic in recent times. To those who don't know about it, It is a website/web application that allows its users to chat with an AI System developed by OpenAI

The AI system on the website is known as "GPT-3," which stands for "Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3." GPT-3 is a large-scale machine learning model that is trained on a vast amount of text data and is capable of generating human-like text in a variety of languages.

Users can chat with GPT-3 by entering text into a text field on the website and receiving a response from the AI system in real-time. The AI system is designed to be able to understand and respond to a wide range of inputs and topics, and users can ask it questions, engage in conversation, or give it prompts to generate text.

GPT-3 is designed to be able to understand and respond to a wide range of inputs and topics. It is capable of generating text in a variety of languages and is able to carry out a range of natural language processing tasks, such as translation, summarization, and question answering.

And that is where it got so much popularity. The AI system works so well that it is able to answer a wide range of questions and solving various tasks, but it is also smart enough to not answer questions that may lead to controversies or disputes.

When this AI System was tested by a lot of programmers to write code, fix errors and even find solutions to interview questions, the AI system is Bang on! Here's a sample:

I am gonna take a leetcode Hard question that was asked by Google and Meta in their SDE interviews and considered to be quite tough considering the acceptance:

I copied the question and pasted it into the ChatGPT textbox to get the solution and specifically asked for the solution in Java.

Here's what happened:

In less than 3 mins, I was able to get the solution with the right approach and explanation.

Most of the top Product Based Tech companies conduct interviews extensively on DSA and select based on that. So with ChatGPT giving the right answer so quickly and interviews made virtual, a lot of hype and chaos took place with questions such as "If this is the end of SDE interviews?"

This is a prime example because as demonstrated above, The AI system was able to solve any technical or DSA question given to it, but companies do not just hire based on those answers.

Companies look at how well the candidate can communicate and test their knowledge on various fronts such as projects mentioned in their resume and the way they handle work-related scenarios. An AI System can't be trained to be able to answer such behavioural and cultural-fit questions.

ChatGPT is a great tool to write scripts for youtube content but a human creator will decide which topic the AI is supposed to write about. What topic comes when and how the video is going to be structured. All of these are pieces that can be done by different AI tools but it needs a human creator at the back to supervise them and put these pieces together.

Synthesia:

Synthesia is a powerful and flexible AI tool that can be used for a wide range of language processing and creative tasks.

Synthesia can be used for a variety of applications, such as natural language processing, language translation, and text-to-speech conversion. It can also be used to generate text or speech for use in creative projects, such as writing articles or creating audio recordings.

Synthesia is designed to be easy to use, with a user-friendly interface that allows users to input text or select from pre-defined prompts to generate output. It is also highly customizable, with options to control the tone and style of the generated text or speech.

Synthesia can generate videos based on speech and text input. It uses random human faces to generate these videos.

Does this mean creating video content can be automated and replace human creators? NO!

Video creation is an art. You can train an AI system to be able to write a script for a video topic or course, train a system to generate video based on that script, a system to automate and integrate this process and a system to get the subtitles in real-time and upload the content to desired platforms such as youtube.

You can do all of it. But the main ingredient here is not AI, It is thought and creativity. The ability of a human to think independently and leverage AI to execute it.

It is a Human that will decide on what topic the content should be based on.

As I said, you can literally automate all the tasks and integrate them to work synchronously but AI would still not be able to replicate major human actions that are essential.

End of the day, AI is just another TOOL!

It is built and trained to optimise workflows and help humans.

Closing notes

Although AI systems might be able to complete some jobs faster or more precisely than humans, they are still unable to think and reason in the same way as people. Furthermore, AI systems are only as good as the data they are trained on, and if the training data is inaccurate or lacking in key information, the AI system is more likely to make mistakes or provide results that are not accurate representations of the real world.

It is important to recognize the limitations of AI and ensure that it is developed and used responsibly. While AI has the potential to bring many benefits and improve our daily lives, it is unlikely to replace humans anytime soon.

AI is a tool that is built around the concept to learn from humans and leverage the knowledge to further enhance human lives.

More AI systems like ChatGPT, Dall-E and Synthesia will come out in the future with better iterations and mindblowing capabilities but they will still not be in a place to replace humans as they are developed and trained in such a manner that can be nothing more than just another productivity tool.
